Lovely Dinner

Saturday, March 14th, 2009 | Family | 2 Comments

We are just home from a lovely dinner at Lisa, Dave, and Electra’s house. Lisa made some delicious orzo salad, seafood and roasted vegetables, and a super mid-east appetizer spread. Also there were Sonia, Aaron, Sidney and Stella, as well as Demian, Emily and Elias. Quentin didn’t really play with Sidney as I thought he would. They play together several times a week – but at Sonia’s. It is interesting to notice Quentin’s different social interactions. He was really interested in what the big kids were up to.
Quentin was in a pretty cranky mood all day. He would only take a 20 minute nap, so that really didn’t help matters. Poor guy. I think he is getting his two year molars already. Or at least they are starting to make their way out. I hear those are the worst. He is becoming quite particular about things lately. If I am not wearing socks or my slippers he will point at my feet and say sock over and over. If my socks or slippers are near by he will bring them over and cry until I put them on my feet. For his own feet he must always have his socks on. And he can not have any leg showing. I have had to get rid of all 18 month pants because they just aren’t long enough.
Last week was all about books. I don’t know how many times I read his busy bee book. He just couldn’t get enough. Then yesterday he didn’t want any books. We looked at some catalogs together, but probably only read two books all day. And definitely didn’t finish any. Than last night, he didn’t want to read at all to go to bed. This was very unusual, as we usually read for a half hour to 45 minutes in bed before lights out. I can hear Bud reading upstairs right now, so I think books must not have totally gone out of favor. It’s just really neat to see his personality emerge. Even when he is fussy and hard to deal with it is still amazing. Bud thinks he has been having a hard time lately because he is discovering he has free will. But yet can’t do everything he wants. I think there is a lot of truth to that theory. He gets very mad when I won’t let him do something, so I have to be totally sure when I tell him no, that I mean no. It is very easy to want to give in to my angry little guy.
My friend Trish just emailed me some pictures of my last walk with Scooter. It’s been almost two months since she died. We still miss her, but I have finally gotten used to not having to walk her. She was such a sweet and yet challenging friend for many years. She really used up all her energy on the last walk on sandy beach. It seemed like she knew what was coming, and really enjoyed one last outing to one of her favorite places. When I first got Scooter I picked her up at Sandy Beach. I went for a walk with her Mama Dog, the other puppies, and the friend who gave her to me. It was sad to take her away from her Mama, but she quickly became part of a new pack. Anyway, I’m going to post the pictures from her last day here – because I’ve been thinking about her and she was so darn beautiful.

Some more pictures of Scooty and Friends

So, Scooter passed around 9 am this morning. She had a great day yesterday. We went to the beach, one of her favorite places. She had an appetite and so I made her eggs, chicken and she even had a little sausage. She took a turn for the worse in the evening, and had a rough night. Dr. Les came in the morning and it was just in time. Scooter was quite uncomfortable by that time. She went quickly, and peacefully. It was very sad for me, but I am glad to have had such a great dog. We were such a great pair. I never trained her to listen very well, but it didn’t really bother me. Of course there were the early days, and trying to get her in the car for an hour…
I’m doing ok, but seem to feel better when I am cooking. So far we have a carrot cake and chocolate cupcakes with mint frosting to thank scooter for. I may gain 10 pounds by the time I am done grieving, and with no dog to force me on daily walks it could be trouble. My 30’s were so tied with my relationship with Scooter. My first date with Bud was a walk up Perseverance trail with Scooter. She of course ran off and I had to search for her. Thus, ending that date. Lucky for us, Bud called again and Scooter would eventually listen to him better than she ever listened to me. So many special and normal memories are tied to what was going on with Scooty. She was our ring bearer, and foot warmer. With my 40th birthday fast approaching I am wondering what is around the corner…

Scooter Update

Friday, January 16th, 2009 | Linda Curtis | 4 Comments

After a pretty good day yesterday, Scooter woke up feeling awful this morning. She had lost her appetite again, and would hardly move. I emailed the vet to see if she could come check on her again. She brought over her ultrasound machine and was able to see quite a few tumors growing on Scooters spleen. She also detected quite a bit of blood seeping out from the tumors. If Scooter were in better shape she might be able to have her spleen removed and recover. But she isn’t really in any shape for surgery, and it seems unlikely that she would be a good candidate for that procedure. We have decided that it is best for us to put her to sleep. Her vet, Dr. Lesley, who has been her vet for her whole life, will come to the house on Monday and put her down. We will have Scooter cremated, and I plan on taking her ashes all over town to her favorite spots. She had a lot of favorite hikes, so I am going to have to be busy. It is a hard decision to make, especially when Scooter has good and bad days. Yesterday her tail was waging and she was able to walk easily around the neighborhood. She was eager to eat any treats I would give her, and wanted to be close to the family. Today, she has stayed at the bottom of the staircase by the door, would hardly walk past the garage, and didn’t want to eat anything. She didn’t even perk up when I was opening a can, or cooking chicken. Usually times when she would be at my feet salivating. So, I will really miss her, she has been a good friend to me for years. Even when she didn’t listen and would try to bite me – she was still endearing to me. I just couldn’t help but love that furry face and adventurous spirit. I wouldn’t have gone on half the hikes or runs during my time in Juneau if it wasn’t for her. It will be strange to be in the wilderness without her. She is still in the house today, but I am missing her already.

Work and Visits

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009 | Family, Linda Curtis, Quentin Curtis | No Comments

I had a busy tuesday with Quentin. We had plans to head out on a snow shoe with our friend Emily. I decided to take Scooter since she has seemed better the past couple of days. We made it about 15 minutes when we realized she wasn’t up for it. Scooter hasn’t been herself for awhile, tonight she didn’t even eat some halibut that I offered her. Our vet is coming in the morning to check her out. It is very sad to see her not her usual sneaky hungry self.
So, anyway – Emily came back to the house and we hung out and chatted. Then she gave me and Quentin a ride into Rainbow. I was able to get a bunch of work done while Quentin hung out with David Ottoson and then took a long nap in the back pack. I think he slept for an hour and half while I priced and shelved vitamins, and changed over sales for the month.
Emily and her daughter Katherine gave me and Quentin a ride home from work as well. They hung out for a while and Quentin and Katherine had a good time together. Quentin really likes Katherine, and just lights up when he sees her. So, he was excited to have her over for a bit.
For dinner I made a big mess of halibut, red peppers, onion, basil, feta, squash, and brussel sprouts. I know it sounds crazy – but it actually tasted great.
After dinner Bud and Quentin had good time playing while I cleaned up and made Quentin some beets. He wanted nothing to do with the halibut and veggies, but I couldn’t imagine he wasn’t hungry. Sure enough he was happy to eat some beets and raisins when they were offered. The kid is gonzo for beets.
