Grow Light installed for Indoor Plants

It’s amazing that we actually need a grow light right over our main living room window, in order to get enough light for plants to grow indoors, but that’s living on Douglas Island for you. When we first moved into our home in 2005 we brought our house plants from our old place and were given several others as house warming gifts. All are dead except for our Jade and one other barely hanging on to life.
Our place is kind of tucked back up on a moutainside which faces the opposite direction of where the sun travels across the sky. Because we are up north in Alaska the sun travels in an arc, so we can get a couple hours of sun actually shining through our front window in the morning, during the summer, from around 6am-9am. Then the sun is behind the house or blocked by trees until sunset. During the winter, the sun is even lower and gets blocked by the mountain side that is behind us. Not to mention that daylight during the winter time can get as short as 8 hours. Take this and add in the fact that Juneau/Douglas gets over 200 days of rain a year, there just isn’t much natural light to grow anything inside the house. It’s not that we are never in the sun. When the sun is out we usually go it, either for a hike or playing on the beach with baby Q. It’s just that our house itself is pretty secluded from the sun. › Continue reading
