friday with friends

Quentin had a great day yesterday. He started out the morning in school, while I ran errands. Then his friend Miles came over and they played with trucks, ate lunch, and played on my old office chair. They love to spin. Then it was nap time. Next up – a play date with Meadow and Elyas at the Taylor’s house. A very full day.

Long Hot mid-July Weekend

We have had another string of incredible days here in Juneau. Quentin has taken full advantage of it and spent some time hiking and at the beach. Early in the week, after some time frolicking naked with his friends Sydney and Margo, we joined them for a glacier swim. There are pools near the glacier – not actually glacial lake – that juneauites go crazy for. It is not easy to get to. Not that it is hard to find or anything. But it entails a walk through the glacier visitor center. In the heart of the tourist season – this is no easy feat. Yet, we made it past the crowds and down to the swimming pools. On the day that we went half of Juneau had the same idea. It was great seeing so many folks – young and old swimming.

Last night Bud gave Quentin his early 2nd year birthday present, only because for Q’s birthday this year we will most likely be up in Haines at the Haines Fair and there really won’t be much birthday partying happening, so he might as well play with his b-day present now. Quentin got a toy front loader and boy was he besides himself. In fact, last night he wanted to take it to bed with him at night time. And later that night he even screamed out “tractor!” in his sleep. This morning he mostly would set it up on the couch and admire it rather than play with it. Everywhere he goes his “tractor” has to be near him.

Today was our friend Laura’s birthday, so a bunch of us went out to the boy scout beach. It wasn’t warm enough for us to go into the water – but it was great for playing in the sand. We brought Quentin’s stroller so we could bring a bunch of his toys out to the beach. He won’t go near the stroller – but it makes for easy trail packin’. Until 2 days ago, Quentin was a super hiker. It was quite a shock on friday when he wanted nothing to do with walking on our afternoon stroll. I wound up carrying him on my hip as I have gotten out of practice bringing a baby carrier with me. Today he did the same thing. This time I had my trusty ergo – so in he went. Although my little guy would prefer to be in my arms.

Quentin and Meadow had a great time playing in the sand and Meadow helped Quentin learn about sharing toys. After a time, some more friends came and there was more playing and a bunch of snacking. I must say, there was also a lot of sand eating during the snack time. It is really hard to keep sand out of kids snacks. I thought I was really smart this time and brought Quentin pancakes. I figured they would be easy to hold and not sticky if they fell. Not so much. Oh well, what’s a little sand. Grapes also hold a surprising amount of sand.

This evening, Sydney came over and her parents went out on a date. I wish I had the camera out for the dance time. They were getting down to some MJ. Bud brought out Thriller and the babies were groovin’. Lots of raspberries were eaten, and both kids like to pretend they are walking off the deck. This is not my favorite game, but Q and Sydney think its hilarious to stick their feet between the deck railings. I have to keep a keen eye on those two. After Sydney had to go home I was able to film Bud & Quentin dancing to Billie Jean.
