New Wooden Fence for the Yard

Friday, July 30th, 2010 | Family | No Comments

A buddy of mine and myself, spent the last 2 weeks constructing a fence constructing a fence around the yard, except the back which opens up to the miles of rainforest behind the house. Along the cliff face of the yard the fence is 6′ high with drooping sections. The front fence is only 4′ high with a gate under the deck that leads to the driveway. There are two locks on the gate to ensure the kiddies can’t sneak out onto the road. Another 6′ high section the back divides our property from the neighbors. The nicely constructed fence is built right up to the property line with a temporary removable fence that extends another 6′ into the bushes on the property behind the house, just to ensure the kiddies can’t easily run off. All that needs to be done now is just stain the post caps and get those up to be completely finished. We had everything from hot July sunny weather to just being completely dumped on while we worked.[[posterous-content:pid___0]]

Had a great time this Fourth of July, despite the rain and cold temps. Quentin really enjoyed the parade. It was probably the best day of his life so far. He had been looking forward to the parade for nearly a month as we marked off each day on his Highlights calendar as we got closer to the day of the parade. He waved his American flag at all the floats that went by. After the parade we watched the kids race the soap box derby cars and then went to a friend’s house for a BBQ, where he got to play with all his buddies until well past bedtime.

Best Day Ever

Monday, July 5th, 2010 | Family | 2 Comments

Yesterday was the best day Quentin has ever had. He had been counting
days until parade day for over a month. Every morning he and bud mark
the calendar. So, you can only imagine the excitement of it finally
being the fourth.
We started the day with a visit from Addy and Shirin and crepes. I
made blueberry filling and bacon and chicken apple sausage filling.
The crepes were buckwheat. Q ate pancakes.
While I was getting breakfast cooked, Bud and Quentin played wii cars
and monster trucks. Not something we do very often. I for one do not
like wii monster trucks. To loud.
When Addy arrived we broke out the snowboarding game and Quentin and
addy had a lot of fun with that.
Our friends left to go check out the Juneau parade. We had plans to
bike over but it was pouring rain and decided to just go to the
douglas parade. It was a really long 2 hours waiting for it to be
time to go. Quentin kept going downstairs to put on his coat and
boots. I set a timer for when it would be time to go – but he has
figured out how to turn it off. It is red when it is running and
green when it stops. So he keeps telling me “the timer is green –
its time to go!”. Smart guy.
When it was finally time we got all suited up in raincoats, hats and
boots. Quentin went in the stroller and Bud and I waddled to Douglas.
We got to see some fire trucks up close and peek in the firehouse.
And then it was time for the parade. I can’t describe how exciting it
was for Q. The people on the floats throw candy into the crowds and
all the kids run like maniacs picking it up. Quentin has not had a
lot of candy in his life. Turns out he is a fan. I tried to limit the
amount he was getting – but noticed bud was right there with the kids
picking it up! And shouting “it’s free!” It was a glimpse at my
husband circa 1977.
With plenty of candy stashed in the stroller we made our way to the
soap box races after the parade.
This was also quite exciting for the little guy. He didn’t really
want to ride in the cars but was psyched to see a real life car race.
Then it started to dump. Good thing we had our rain gear on, as we
headed up to a BBQ.
Our friends Sarah, Alex, and Nicky have a kid central BBQ every
fourth. For at least three hours the kids ran and chased and climbed
and ripped apart Nicky’s room. He was a great sport. Bud and I brought
fillet to grill. It was super. Quentin had potato chips and a couple
of almonds.
When it was time to go home Quentin was really sad. But he got into
his stroller with a milk and we started off on the long journey home.
He fell asleep almost as soon as his head hit his pillow. Bud and I
tossed and turned while fireworks went on for 3 hours. Really. I
wouldn’t be so bah humbug about it except for the fact that I can’t
see the fun in fireworks when it is raining and the cloud cover is so
low. And maybe being pregnant and having a sore back doesn’t help.
Bud had heartburn from his steak. All in all it was a great day.
And I just heard a news alert from upstairs! Quentin put some pee pee
in the potty at home for the first time! I think I might cry.
